We visited Edinburgh Castle, towering high up on volcanic rock, and walked the Royal Mile today.

We learned about King James VI (1566-1625), son of Mary Queen of Scots. He commissioned what has become the most popular translation of the bible, known as the King James version. He is also famous for expressions that have become part of our lexicon such as “eat, drink and be merry” and “woe is me”.

On a darker note, he had a fear of magic and witches, which lead him to be the most notorious witch hunter of the time. His actions resulted in the trial and death of thousands of people, most of them women.

The witches live on! This is a hotel.

And some witches were out on the Royal Mile with my favorite animals … owls.
