On our drive across Scotland we randomly picked Loch Awe to stop and stretch our legs.

The loch and surrounding hills were, well awesome! We drove parallel to the loch looking for somewhere to stop and saw an old building and parking lot for a charming little church called Saint Conan’s Kirk.

The chapel was built to commemorate the victory of Robert the Bruce over his rival, John Comyn, at the Pass of Brandon around 1308 – one of many Scottish civil war battles. This victory was significant as with Comyn, his main rival, out of the way, Robert the Bruce was crowned the King of Scotland, which he held until his death in 1329.
Within the chapel is a life-size wood and alabaster figure of Robert the Bruce and beneath the figure is a small ossuary containing one of his bones taken, from an abbey.
