Stepping off the edge

Owlmother's adventures

Picking up where I left off… kinda

I started a blog called Stepping off the Edge when I left my comfortable middle class and middle age life in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and headed to Adelaide, Australia to return to school in 2012.

For 8 years I blogged about events in my life…family weddings, birth of grandkids, travel. I no longer own the email address associated with that blog so couldn’t continue, hence starting over in this space.

So I picked up where I left off with our trip in fall 2024 to Europe and will continue with India and the Maldives .

Ferrying off the Island

We will take 4 ferries this trip. Usually I make a reservation but on two of the sailings they were sold out and on one of them it was first come first served.

So I had some anxiety worrying we wouldn’t make either ferry to get to our destination. Fortunately we got to both terminals in time to get on.

We arrived in Powell River and had lunch on a patio overlooking the water.

After lunch we went to see ‘The Giant Hulks’ which are 10 WW1 and WW2 concrete ships that form a breakwater. No longer in use, as many as 30 ships, were hauled up to Powell River beginning in the 1930s from as far away as Pearl Harbour.

The ships are a dramatic site, all in a row.

Nearby were several huge, noisy seals.

We headed to the second ferry terminal at Slatery Bay. While waiting in the ferry lineup we spotted this vehicle. It was clear from the words written all over it the owner is a raving socialist!

The vessel took us on a beautiful trip meandering through Jervis Inlet between hilly islands to Earls Cove. We even saw whales spouting in the distance!

We made it! We arrived at our hotel in Sechelt in time for Popsicle Happy Hour!

Another amazing sunset, this time looking back to Vancouver Island from the Sunshine Coast
