Stepping off the edge

Owlmother's adventures

Picking up where I left off… kinda

I started a blog called Stepping off the Edge when I left my comfortable middle class and middle age life in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and headed to Adelaide, Australia to return to school in 2012.

For 8 years I blogged about events in my life…family weddings, birth of grandkids, travel. I no longer own the email address associated with that blog so couldn’t continue, hence starting over in this space.

So I picked up where I left off with our trip in fall 2024 to Europe and will continue with India and the Maldives .

Isla de Holbox

As much as we love Cozumel, when we booked the trip last fall we decided to spend a few days exploring Holbox. It’s a remote island with beautiful beaches. There are no cars, mostly dune buggies, and the hotels are small – three story at most. The description reminded us of The Maldives.

Playa Holbox

Holbox is located north of Cancún. It took the better part of the day to travel there. We took a ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen then a bus ride to Chiquila through rural communities and jungle and another ferry to island.

We left our luggage with our scuba stuff in Cozumel and just took backpacks. When we arrived in Holbox we walked from the ferry terminal to our hotel, about 30 minutes, walking in soft, talc like sand.

Our hotel was at the far end of the island. We were welcomed by a serene oasis. Yoga classes, a pool and messages reminding you to relax!

Included in the hotel was a full breakfast. It was delicious but more than I could eat!

Three course breakfast!

On the ferry over we met a couple from Sidney (near us) and the lovely server at breakfast had lived in Victoria! Small world!

Each day we walked off breakfast along the beach out to the sand spit when the tide was low. The area is called Yum Balam. There were all kinds of migratory birds and lots of unique shells.

The food at the local restaurants was delicious! We had some of the best food of the trip and definitely the best tacos!

Shrimp and Fish tacos.

There isn’t a reef there so no diving. Holbox is known for the visit of the Whale Sharks in June.

We felt even more rested when we left. Nice place! We highly recommend it!
