Stepping off the edge

Owlmother's adventures

Picking up where I left off… kinda

I started a blog called Stepping off the Edge when I left my comfortable middle class and middle age life in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and headed to Adelaide, Australia to return to school in 2012.

For 8 years I blogged about events in my life…family weddings, birth of grandkids, travel. I no longer own the email address associated with that blog so couldn’t continue, hence starting over in this space.

So I picked up where I left off with our trip in fall 2024 to Europe and will continue with India and the Maldives .

Under the Sea Creatures

We saw lots of sea creatures on our dives.

This beautiful Sting Ray swam close to us in a non-threatening way, gracefully gliding by us, slowly flapping their body.

You frequently see beautiful pink Conch Shells in shops. I had one that I gave to my daughter. We occasionally saw them washed up on the beach. Here’s a heart shape formation of conch shells on the beach of one of the hotels. A sign asks people to add to it.

You forget they are an animal. On one of the dives we saw several Conch Shells like this ‘walking’ leaving their long trail

We saw 7 Spotted Eagle Rays on one dive. Five of them were too far away to get a good photo but these two swam close to us. The are graceful and a different shape to the Stingray. They have a beak like head like an eagle.

Cozumel is know for it’s Lobsters, there are even two Lobster House restaurants. Usually we see lobsters on night dives when lobsters, crabs and other crustaceans come out but we saw several lobsters during the day.

I didn’t get a photo of the green Moray Eels we saw, they are quite ugly! They can be several feet long and usually hide under coral. This much smaller Chain Moray Eel hung around the rocks at the hotel beach. I was worried a pelican would get him but he managed to evade them.
