Greece is my favourite country in the world! I fell in love with it on my first visit 44 years ago.
At that time you could freely walk around the Greek and Roman ruins in Athens. Now you buy tickets to the different sites and crowds are tightly controlled with clearly marked paths. A good thing to protect history.

Pericles (c. 495–429 BC) oversaw the construction of the citadel in the fifth century BC.
Like every castle and ruin we’ve visited on this trip, the structures in the Acropolis have been destroyed and reconstructed several times over the centuries.

Buildings in Athens are not to exceed 32 metres or 14 stories so as not to obliterate the view of the Acropolis,

The Romans conquered Athens in 146 BC and left behind many buildings and ruins below the Acropolis, most found in Roman Agora.

We ate dinner at a restaurant in the shadow of the Acropolis and in the midst of the Roman ruins.

We finished off the evening admiring the Acropolis and reminiscing about our day from our hotel’s rooftop terrace.
